You know that horrible feeling when you realise you’re not going to make a deadline? Your stomach drops and you panic. First things first: just breathe for a second. Panicking doesn’t help and you need your brain working. You’ve still got options, and some of them are actually great.
Check the Deadline First
Before you do anything else, check what time it’s actually due. Is it midnight tonight or tomorrow morning at 9? Does your uni do that thing where Sunday actually means Monday morning? Sounds dead obvious, but loads of people find out they’ve got a few extra hours they didn’t know about.
Have a proper look at where you submit it. Some universities give you a bit of grace time after the deadline, usually a few hours. Recent numbers from HESA show that over 60% of UK unis now do this, even if you lose some marks for it. Getting capped at 5% off is way better than getting a zero.
Email Your Lecturer Now
Most lecturers have been there themselves. They’re not sitting there excited to fail you. But they can’t do anything if you don’t tell them what’s going on.
Send them an email now. Keep it short and honest. If you’ve got proper reasons like being ill, family stuff, or other serious things, say that too. The Office for Students makes them have fair policies for when students are struggling, so use them.

Hand in Something
Here’s what loads of students don’t realise: handing in something incomplete is nearly always better than handing in nothing.
An essay that’s half done might get you 40%. A decent intro and one proper section might get you 35%. That’s the difference between failing the module and passing it. That’s the difference between resits and having to redo the whole year.
Even if you’ve only got a couple of hours, write what you can. Get an introduction down. Stick any kind of conclusion on it even if it’s rushed. Chuck a reference list together. Hand it in.
Getting zero for not submitting is awful and it absolutely destroys your overall marks way more than getting a low pass.
Check What Your Uni’s Rules Are
Every UK university does late submissions differently and it’s not always clear. Some let you submit late for up to two weeks but you lose marks. Others just give you zero if it’s late at all.
Look at your student handbook or the uni website. Search for stuff like “mitigating circumstances,” “extenuating circumstances,” or “late submission policy.” UCAS reckons students should know this stuff early on, but if you don’t, look now.
Think About Getting Help
Sometimes you’re completely stuck. Maybe the topic’s way harder than you thought. Maybe you’ve got three other deadlines this week. Maybe everything’s just been a lot lately and you physically can’t get it done.

What Happens Next
If you do miss the deadline completely and get zero or capped marks, it’s not the end of everything.
One bad mark doesn’t wreck your whole degree. Most UK universities count your final year way more than earlier years. Some don’t even count first year marks towards your final grade at all.
